Its been a fun day...  Had to be in early @ work today and made it with no problems...

Its just the trip to Seattle that has problems....     I wish they notified me about the problem with the airtrain at JFK....  Due to it being out of order and the mad rush to buses that did not help, I got stuck in NYC overnight.  :(

Just at a different airport than I wanted to fly out of.  (It was free standby (or pay $$$) to get a confirmed seat in the morning.  I took the confirmed seat for a few $$$.)  I am just getting to Seattle about 14 hours later than I wanted to and with a transfer that was unplanned.

At least with the transfer, I can grab something in Tx for interfilk.  (If I see somethg that works for interfilk during the layover, it will be picked up and donated.  I did get time to get ginger candy at least.)  Plus now I get to listen to a few recordings while waiting...   (including a brunch CD contribution recorded at Conflikt 2012.)

recordings 1993 Conterpoint is interesting and helping select songs for its CD that is in the works..

Updated...  I got in about 1p and had fun at the convention.   Friday night was long, but worth the challenges of getting to the con.
A couple of weeks ago, I posted about a kickstarter project that I want to see happen.   Filker Gary McGath is trying to get enough funds together to get a book on digital archiving published.  He is talking about ways to preserve your data, so that it WILL last for future generations.

And from the previous post -

Gary McGath is writing a book on digital preservation.    It is
scheduled to be published as an ebook and is for the average user vs the
academic fields.

This
is one of those resources that I want to take advantage of and make
sure I am preserving tapes that I am converting in the best format
possible.

Also, Gary's blog on the kickstarter project
including a song  about the project (day 8) in mp3 and lossless .wav
format for digital preservation -

Update 1/16 - The project reached its goal and funded!
I don't normally signal boost anything other than a filk album (and there were a large number of them released this year.), but as a filk archivist in the digital format, this is a project I think that should be supported.

Unfortunately, due to work scheduling 6-7 new offices opening in January and February, I had to cancel my plans to attend GaFilk.   3 offices are opening on the monday after the convention.

I will not be there this year, BUT I do plan to be back at the convention in 2014.   (If by some miracle I can get the weekend off and plane tickets are cheap enough combined with good weather, I may make an attempt at a very short visit to the convention.)

My membership is available to be purchased by someone who is attending the convention, who does not have a membership yet.   I have a great deal for someone if wanted.  You can attend GaFilk 2013 for FREE on my membership.  The catch is I would like you to purchase me an attending pre-registration (@ the con) for GaFilk 2014.

12/27 - The membership has been transfered.
It was interesting.   I have never been to a Smofcon before, but I had a good time and if you are convention runner (and I know a number of people who read my LJ are), and one does occur in your area, I would recommend attending.   I actually attend panels for once and listened.  There was some good advice on various topics on how to run a convention.  The fanish inquition was fun and the upcoming Worldcon bids (thru 2022, now) had some very good presentations.  The most enthusiastic presentation for 2015 was definately Helsinki, but the one presentation that I think stole the show was the Chrismas in Boston 2020 bid.

I do plan to catch Smofcon the next time it floats into my regional travel area.  (Its being held in Toronto in 2013 and then floating to the west coast for at least 1-2 years.)
Now that things have slowed down a little in the recovery from Sandy @ work...

I have been working lots of long hours for my day job dealing with disaster recovery.  I got lucky and had power the whole time.   Work did not and got it back on Saturday morning.

My parents got power back last weekend.    The gas lines that I have seen have been very long.   Fortunately, I have manged to not need to deal with them yet.  That is next week's challenge.  And I just heard they are supposedly doing odd/even gas days here on Long Island.  (I hope it helps.)

The weather in the NYC area has been fun...  First we had the Wash and Blow Dry (Sandy), then we had the agitation.  (A 2.0 earthquake in NJ) and now we have had a rinse cycle with extra air included (Nor'easter - Athena).

As for the kickstarter, I found this a few weeks ago over on Kickstarter.com.

Someone is trying to raise enough funds to hire Tom Smith to write them a song.  (Tom knows about it.)

I am off to Philcon this evening to run filk for the second year in a row.   (The con starts tomorrow.)  I will see some of you there.
I got home about 30-40 minutes ago and booted the computer up to let everyone know I was in.   Work had me do a side trip to Manhattan last night (and tonight) to move servers between our powerless office and the Bronx based emergency backup site.

Driving in Manhattan with no power was interesting at best.  (I would prefer to never do that again.)

More when unpacked in morning when I am working from home.
[livejournal.com profile] batyatoon was dropped off safely around 5:30p.   I had a call during the second part of the drive from work about getting the mail system up and running and after the drop off, I got a call about a possible visit to Manhattan to move computers.  (Which happened.)  I turned around and picked up a coworker in Brooklyn, drove into a very dark manhattan (VERY weird) and I had not seen manhattan that dark since summer 2003.

[livejournal.com profile] jslove should be home soon (if not already) with T.   He was picking her up before heading home.   Watch facebook for his updates.

Update at 12:20a.   JSLove is home.  (Saw on facebook.)

I should be home in a few hours and seeing if I can find a way back into NYC to deal with the work emergency.

Update @ 2am.... I am spending the night in the office.  Its faster than going home to unload the car.   (Fast food across the street was still open for me to get something for dinner.)
Just wanting to let everyone know that I am on my way home from OVFF by car and spending the night in eastern PA at a hotel.   (We stopped at a hotel off of i-80 around mile marker 275.)   We being  JSLove and and Batyatoon.  I hope to be on the road home in the morning and back into NY (for me and Batya) and Mass for JSLove.

Thank you to everyone for a great OVFF.
Signalboosting Good news from the [livejournal.com profile] filk LJ.

Albacon...

Oct. 22nd, 2012 12:02 am
Albacon 2012 was fun and relaxing.   Limited filking, but a bit of smofing that was interesting.  (Talking with a few people about the 2015 Worldcon bids and getting some pros and cons on all of the bids.)   It was (compared to most conventions I attend) a relaxacon.  Very little responsiblity during the weekend.

I also released Roberta's new CD at the convention, Heroes and Villains & Some In Between...

Its now available on bandcamp at the page I setup for Roberta - http://robertarogow.bandcamp.com

I hope to be putting up a couple of extra songs onto the site for free download in the near future.

After a number of late nights and a lot of work to make sure I had songs in a good, usable format, Roberta Rogow's latest CD is done.

The title is "Heroes and Villains (& Some In Between....)"   Cover art is available here - http://www.floatingfilk.com/hv.jpg

The CD will be releasing at Albacon 2012, in Albany, NY where Roberta is filk GOH this weekend.

It will also be available on Roberta's page on bandcamp, which is at http://robertarogow.bandcamp.com, early next week.

There will be a limited number of copies of the CD brought to OVFF.

Unlike Roberta's last album, which was more of a live album, this one is a studio only album.  (No intros on the songs, except for one where it is part of the song.)

It consists of 12 songs and one spoken word piece.

An alternative take of "A Conversation in a Corridor" was uploaded to the filk archive earlier this month.  A free membership is required to listen or download the recording.

(and I just checked the CD and it now shows up in iTunes!)

I am just spreading word on this one for Prometheus Music.

Eli just (as in the past hour) released a LIMITED edition of Leslie Fish's newest album, Avalon Is Risen, in a new format.  As only Leslie and Monster only.  (No backing tracks or additional performers on this album.)  This is in the style of the filk from the 80s.

This is a mp3 only album.

More details here -

http://www.prometheus-music.com/avalon-retro.html

And if you want the full version that was released on CD, its available here -

http://www.prometheus-music.com/avalon.html

News of this was sent out via his Eagle Byte's newsletter.
I am just wondering on this one...

I will publishing another CD for Roberta Rogow this fall and have recently looked into the idea of doing a small professionally duplicated batch of CDs (about 100 or 150 copies) and a larger batch of download cards.

What I am wondering is - should I do the download cards or do you prefer purchasing CDs?  Both the discs and the download cards will be made available to the filk dealers.    Pricing on the CDs will likely be about $10-$12 depending on the duplication and song royalty costs.   Download cards will be priced a little lower.

Should I bother with the download cards?   I have seen 1 album on filk dealer tables (Ookla The Mok's Nerdvana) as a download card.  (This was available both at Worldcon and at ConCertino 2012.)  The rest of the albums on the tables from both filk dealers were CD only.

9/21 update -
I held off on the responses for a few days while waiting for 1-2 people whom I know run a few days behind on LJ.   The planned print run will be CD only and possibly making the album available for download purchasing somewhere with the same music.   The print run is going to increase slightly (so I have stock for a while, but not as long as one of Roberta's earlier CDs... I still have over 100 copies of an earlier album in my basement.)
With Chicon having some great news for filkers (Juanita's Big Heart Award and Seanan's first hugo) and then taking a few days off post Worldcon, I just realised I never mentioned the Pegasus ballot is now live over on OVFF's page.   (It was released during Chicon, but I was a little bit busy recording the convention and assisting with sound there.)

The ballot is online at - http://www.ovff.org/pegasus/2012finalballot.html

Also, I put up the annual post over on the filk archive at http://www.filkarchive.org.uk for the nominees on the site.

Congratulations to everyone on the ballot this year.

update - Link fixed.

Chicon 7

Sep. 5th, 2012 03:24 am
Chicon was a lot of fun.  I got to see people I have not seen in a while plus getting to meet a couple of people I only have heard before on tape.  I also gave them digital copies of the tapes they are on.

I mostly saw the filk track and did not even see the art show, but I found the consuite (and found out the art show was right next to it during the dead dog party.)

The concerts were great.  I got to record a few people I had only had heard on tape/CD before.   The operetta was good and worth attending.  Great job on the Operetta, Brenda!
At this time, they are still giving out the hugos (they are doing Dramatic Presentation - Long form as I type).

Big Heart Award went to Juanita Coulson.

Seanan currently has won 1 of 4 categories she is nominated in.  The other 3 categories have not been announced, yet.  I will know the good news in the very near future.  (I am being optimistic.)

Squeecast won for Fancast.

Now if Wicked Girls wins for Best Related, I will be very happy.

Update.  It was 1 for 4.
I got in from 7Pi-Con about an hour or so back (affter a short visit to my parents on the way home.)

I got to see a few NEFilkers that I don't get to see unless I get to that area, plus a couple of good concerts that I was able to attend.  (And in one case, surprise!  I was running the sound board.  Fortunately, it was pre-setup by the head of the sound for the room and the concert was accapella and not using amplifcation.)  Recordings on those two concerts have been given to the performers.  At least one of them is going to likely be used by the performers.  (It already was used for the recording workshop this morning.)
Just signal boosting about a new filk CD from Cat Faber (formerly of Echo's Children)

http://catsittingstill.livejournal.com/260997.html

Its release concert is occurring at Confluence this weekend.

Also, her band camp page -

http://catfaber.bandcamp.com/

She also has a few other songs available there, too.
I just submitted the CD to the CDDB via iTunes, so hopefully it will turn up on your end, soon.

Also, I mentioned this last week, but I never posted this information.  (Its a lot easier to read on the computer screen than the j-card.)

Here's the liner notes from the CD, including the corrected credits, behind the cut.
Window On Time )

Cover art may get online, when I get a jpg version done and I finally update my web page.  Also, a mistake slipped thru the proof-reading and accidentally credited "Les Barker" as someone else.  This was caught before anyone got their CD and was corrected by members of the concom.  This list includes the correction.
