Here's the liner notes that got printed on the CD that everyone who had a membership to Contata got.

I was keeping the title a secret because I wanted to see Deb's reaction when she found out that she had the title song on the CD.

Also on this list are the guests for the 2012 NEFilk convention, Concertino who contributed recordings to the CD. Thank you to everyone for your permission to include your recordings on this CD and to [livejournal.com profile] ladymontegreenLadyMontegreen for her assistance on finding a a recording at practically the last minute.

If you have a supporting membership, your copy will be sent out with your songbook. Also, if you did not get an insert with the CD, please let me know. I had a number of misprinted ones that slipped thru (2am Thursday morning printing does not help) and the options of a PDF version or a paper version is available to you.

If you by chance got a bad CD, please contact me via email. It will be replaced.

7-7 Update. The cover art is now online on my web page at http://www.floatingfilk.com/fanac.jpg (now if I just get the time to update the web page itself...)
I got home a few hours ago (via my parents house for dinner.)

Just a quick note for now...

The convention was good and a lot of fun. Major thank yous to Spencer Love and Joe Kesselman who assisted with running sound and making it so that everyone had a good time! I could not have done it without your help.

More details when I have time (a day or two from now), including track listing for the CDs I published for the convention. (Fanac, Dark Deeds & Desperate Men (and Women). There were 4 new CDs at the convention that I know of and got copies of.)
I just finished duplicating (but not labeling) 300 CDs for Contata over the past few days...

Tonight's project was the big one. 150 CDs for all of the members of Contata 2011. With a membership, you are gettting a CD.

What's on there?

Songs from this year's guests - Judi Miller, Tom Smith, Lord Landless/Pavlov's Duck and Deb Wunder PLUS 1 song each from next year's NEFilk convention. Sorry, I am not allowed to reveal those names till Friday.

If you wish to get a copy of this CD, you can easily get one by either attending Contata THIS WEEKEND or by getting a supporting membership to the convention, if you can't attend the con. (IE - You are going to Westercon instead of visiting us on the east coast.)

http://www.contata.org
NEFilk21/Contata 6 is next week and I am releasing multiple CDs at the convention (vs the usual 1 CD that I have been doing the past 3 years.). Contata will have at least 4 new CDs available (3 from me.) I have only heard that a 4th one is being planned for release, but I don't have any details on the 4th one at this time.

The all member CD (title being decided, but I think I finally have one!) which everyone who is a member (attending and supporting)of Contata, will get a copy of the CD. The CD includes 2-3 songs of each of the guests of Contata.

The guests of Contata are:

Judi Miller (GOH)
Tom Smith (Toastmaster)
Pavlov's Duck (Interfilk guests, name change from Lord Landless)
Deb Wunder (Listener)

Plus one song each from Concertino 2012's guests, to be announced next week @ Contata.

I will post the song list either during or post Contata. (Depending on how much free time I have from the soundboard.)

The other two CDs -

One is for the Special Friend package. Tom Smith has a script for it on his web page at the following link... http://www.tomsmithonline.com/comedy/rhms.htm

The last one is a for sale CD. Roberta Rogow has her 4th CD releasing @ Contata. That CD is called "Dark Deeds and Desperate Men (and Women)". Its a mystery themed CD, 15 songs plus separate intros. 14 being sung by Roberta, and the last song on the CD is a cover of "Been There, Dun That" by Juanita Coulson, recorded at her concert @ NASFiC 2010.

Track lists for Contata all member CD and Dark Deeds will appear on my web page post convention, likely mid July since I will not have time to add the CDs to the page before then. (Plus some free songs to download.)

Just got in from I-CON 30 a little while ago, where I am the Filk TL. It was a good con and the GOH I had out to I-CON, Heather Dale, was really wonderful to listen to. This is the first time I have actually had time to sit down and listen to her sing without being either tied to a sound system somehow (most conventions I see Heather at) or running between rooms to change a recording device (OVFF). It was really interesting to watch Ben playing guitar and Mandolin on some of the songs. (Sedna was one song I really enjoyed seeing live. Watching Ben play on it was interesting from a sound tech point of view.) Heather's way of telling a tale and then going into a song that was introduced by that story works so well in a live environment and really needs to be seen. Heather's web page (http://www.heatherdale.com)

The other scheduled filkers who were at the convention (THANK YOU ALL FOR COMING TO I-CON!!!!) were Ariel Cinii, Roberta Rogow (I-CON 29 Filk GOH), and Erwin "Filthy Pierre" Strauss. Everyone's concerts were fun. I have to make the call for filkers earlier next year. Also, Captain Zorikh attended some of the filk circles and shared a few songs with us in addition to his concerts.

We had 1-2 people who did show up with instruments at various point and a good time appeared to had by all. I hope they will attend again next year. I plan to keep using the same source of theme circle ideas (Pegasus Floating Categories) next year.
Just speading word for some others this time...

Urban Tapestry (2011 Filk Hall of Fame inducties), has a new DVD available. They have about 15-20 copies remaining from the print run of 100 made for FKO last weekend.

http://debbieohi.squarespace.com/urban-tapestry-shop/

Duckon Fundraiser CDs - The Talis Kimberley concert has been released last weekend @ FKO. Its not on the Duckon page, but I will have stock (as soon as Jan gets it to me, hopefully in time for I-CON.) I believe its only a CD at this time. Note - I just agent the CDs for Duckon, all money goes back to Duckon. I also have a limited number of the older Duckon CDs and DVDs available, too.

I-CON next weekend - While there will not be a CD release (that I know of), the filk GOH is Heather Dale, who was the Contata 2008 GOH. Also attending is last year's filk GOH, Roberta Rogow and Ariel Cinii. Both of whom have concerts. There will be a number of theme circles.

Roberta's concert is being recorded as part of her next CD. (More details when its closer to being done. Its aiming for a spring release date.)

EDIT - Fixed spelling error.
I went to boskone this weekend. It was a fun con and a last minute (last few weeks) decision to go. It was fun to hear Erica Neely perform a concert vs being the toastmistress.

I finally listened to the recording I had made of walk in the day at conflikt on Friday and then saw the east coast debut on sunday. Both casts were very good and Ben has written a great musical. Now if we can only get the last act. He did mention that this was a beta release. :). I look forward to hearing the finished product. Only two people we in both casts and one person changed rolls. If you get to see "walk in the day" during on of the other performances scheduled in 2011,it's worth it. There are at least 2 other chances to see it.

I also took an extra day in Mass. to do an offsite backup of recordings at the big blue house (Spencer's) and gasp, start converting some tapes to hard disk. I unfortunately only have time to convert 2maybe 3 tapes today, but I do plan to get back here again soon to convert more tapes to hd. Free weekends being the problem, but this will happen soon!)

Update... (besides finding the update button on here finally) - 2 tapes have been moved to hard drive from OVFF 10. 1 concert, a singalong and 3 hours of open filking were transfered.)

Conflikt 4

It was a lot of fun. 3 nights in a row of dawn patrol for me. (I had to stay on east coast time, unfortunately, so I was not able to time shift to pacific time.)

The concerts were great and while a couple of people I have seen a number of times at various conventions, seeing those who are local to the Pacific Northwest were a lot of fun for me.

One highlight that I enjoyed was the debut of Ben Newman's 'Walk In The Day' musical. While I have been listening to the song on the iPod on random play since he released it, I didn't catch the dark/light reversal till partway thru the performance. Also, thank you again to John Seigers for the assistance on generating the CDs for the performers (and the interfilk winner.)
I finally broke down and joined another time sink... Facebook. I sent out a few friend requests and am looking for that new filk group that someone mentioned that formed recently. I don't plan to be on that web page very often. (Mostly joined for that filk group.)
I leave for Conflikt in a couple of minutes from work... I am glad I booked an early evening flight with last nights snow storm.

GaFilk 2011

Jan. 9th, 2011 02:15 pm
The con has been a lot of fun. Lots of good concerts from all of the guests (except the Super Secret guest who had to cancel last minute due to a family emergency), the circles that formed were good and lots of fun. (I actually got to hear them for a while this convention.)

We got a bonus concert from Dave Clement who donated a concert to interfilk and the winners from the voice auction decided to share the concert with the con. (Thank you, Terri, Mel & Dave!) They are getting a CD as soon as I burn it out of the computer. (During closing ceremonies, I hope.)

Howard Scrimgeour was a wonderful interfilk choice. He introduced us to a lot of older songs that are no longer being sung just due to age.

Matt Leger did a great concert with a couple of debuts to the wider filk community. He was also backed by Gary Ehrlich on guitar.

Seanan's concert was excellent and she was backed by a great insta band when her regular stunt guitarist and vocalists had to cancel their GaFilk trip.

Antithesis (Teri and Linda) did a fun concert on Friday night. (The minor sound gear (mic stand) problems got us started on a humors note.)

Dave just ended the concert. :( Dead dog soon.
A couple of people asked me about the recorders that the sound team was using at OVFF.

They are Zoom H2 units with a silicon drop shield present on them. (To protect the unit from my being a klutz.) I did see at least 3-4 others at the con, so they are appearing to become more common.

There are recordings from the units on filk archive, if you wish to hear what I was able to edit from an edited zoom recording, there are a number that I have shared (with full permissions granted) at -

http://www.filkarchive.org.uk

Permissions are only done in writing (with very rare exceptions.)

Fuzzyvanman and Spencer recorded the soundboard to digital hard drive recorders.

As for getting copies of the recordings from OVFF, so that you can hear something from there, I don't own the music rights. Those fall to Fuzzyvanman (and OVFF) and I don't control them. I have to check with Fuzzyvanman first, if I want to do something with a recording beyond personal usage. (This technically includes honoring your request for copies. Please note, if someone is asking for something YOU sang, then you will be asked before its shared (your permission being granted is required). We are hoping to get some form of a CD out someday. (We have to ID about 80 hours of audio FIRST and we have day jobs.)

Now to find something you had sung at the con in a recorded open filk circle (and this would be for any convention I record at, not just OVFF), I will require the following info -

Convention, Room, day, aproximate time and any IDing info incase I don't know your song or voice. (First verse would be very helpful in making sure I got the right song for example.).

All H2 recordings are audio date stamped with convention, day, time, recorder number for the room, and recorder number.

Using a request I am working on pulling, at the moment, I had a request from a filker for a song for them to learn by writing down the following info -
Saturday @ OVFF, German Village Room, around 11ish from someone else.

I have already cleared permission with - Fuzzyvanman and the performer (who will be given the link to download the song once its pulled from the 1 3/4 hour long file.) in this case.

What I can share, will appear on filk archive over time. (I have 2 songs I really want to pull, but they are also candidates for a future CD (and I am taking notes as I find the songs I would want to use for that.)

On a side note, I also got a few other tapes handed to me over the weekend of some live recordings from a while ago (80s) and those will be making a digital jump for the owner, and they requested the audio not get lost to time. Those recordings will be shared on the filk archive as permissions come in.

Well... N.E. Filk 20 /Conterpoint 7 (2010) is just about over. :(

The convention was a lot of fun and I had a good time. I got to see a few people I didn't expect to see here at the con (from out of the Northeast area) and a lot of the regulars from the Northeast.

I got in late Thursday night and was on hand to assist with the setup of the sound system (mostly assisted Kludge on carrying stuff into the main room).

Happyfunpaul opened the music portion of the convention with a concert. (I had a good time.) The 2x10s were lightly signed up for (this problem occurred all weekend, the signups were light for all sign up opportunities. Those who did sign up were good.) The memorial concert was a nice rotation of performances of songs from those who are unfortunately no longer with us. Its was a nice sampler of some of their songs. Open filk turned out to only form one circle which went a good chunk of the night.

On Saturday, we had a lightly attended one shot opening up the music, followed by a fun song SequiChair.... The 4 performers taking turns happened (in order) to be the previous (including Conterpoint 2010) 4 NE Filk con chairs.

Sassafrass was postponed due to a reaction with lunch (they did perform later in the evening and did a good concert for the members we had present. (Sassafrass had 2 3pm concerts in 2 states, 400 miles apart on Saturday.) Juanita's Toastmistress concert was excellent and she covered some songs including one I had not heard before I started on the CD for the con. She did a cover of Richter scale where she added a verse at the end to cover the 2004 Indonesia earthquake.

After the dinner break, we got to hear Sassafrass and then interfilk guest, Char MacKay. Char was wonderful. (Sorry, after a weekend at the con, I am forgetting what people did sing, but I plan to listen to the recordings I made sometime in the near future.)

Then we got to hear the GOHs - Ed Stauff and Mary Ellen Wessels. Mew and Ed were nice to the soundman this time. They were not backed by 12 people this time. (Just Char on a song or two.) They did a great concert for about an hour plus an encore song. The introduced more people to David Massengill's "The Return" during their concert and it was a great cover.

The interfilk auction this year seemed smaller than others I have seen in the past. I had donated a bunch of stuff to interfilk and much of it ended up selling, but 1-2 items are being sent over to the next interfilk auction.

Open filk became two strong circles for the evening, with the later of the two ending about 5-6am. Its entertaining to sit in circle with this crowd. There are a number of good songs that you never hear otherwise.

On Sunday, after I crawled out of bed, I made it to the listener's choice concert where a number of songs chosen by the Baker's were played by others by various members of the convention and they did send a recording to be played during the concert. (Sorry, I don't remember who sang what or what was sung, other than the conchair, Joshua Kronengold, Lisa Pardol, and others performed.) I do recall Gary E. covering Jonathan's Lunacon song contest Entry - Valancy's Home.

Among the fun of the dead dog circle, is Ben Newman and MEW and Ed singing "Are We There Yet" for Char who has not heard it before.

Thank you to the concom and chair Gary Ehrlich for a great convention.

Next year's convention is Contata 2011, in Parsippany, NJ where I have not learned my lesson and I am running sound again.

Contata's guest list is -
GOH - Judi Miller
Toastmaster - Tom Smith
Listener Guest - Deb Wunder
Interfilk Guests - Lord Landless (from Germany!)

http://www.contata.org for more information.
I am posting while enroute to another con.

I caught the bus from NYC to DC for a different method to get to/from the con (and a good price too.)

Since Bolt Bus has free internet, I decided to try it. It works, too. Just don't plan on streaming any video and audio while on it.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the con this weekend. Conterpoint at http://www.conterpoint.org promises to be fun.

Also, I am attending as part of the Contata concom. I didn't learn my lesson last time... I am running sound again. I also have plans to release a CD at the con. I am not sure if its going to be a premium CD or an everyone CD again. (I am personally aiming for the 2nd option, but I will have to see what is decided up.)

Contata's web page is at http://www.contata.org.
Just posting the liner notes of the premium member filk CD that I did for Conterpoint 2010. http://www.conterpoint.org

Thank you again to everyone for your permission and to MEW for a hand on getting many of the permissions.

I don't normally post about family here, but I just got the good news I was hoping for. She came out of surgery and will be OK.

My sister (she is younger than me) had colon cancer discovered back in February (they caught it VERY early) and went thru chemo and radiation in the early spring. They just had the surgery to remove the shrunken tumor and she is currently in recovery.
