For recording an open filk room, the H2 on a mic stand is great. You will likely need to use some editing software (in post) to raise the volume so you can hear what was sung on the lower volumed areas, but I have found it to work great.
As for the H4, its more of a directional unit and might be more of what you are looking for if you are trying to just record your concerts.
And a new device (from the same company) that I am looking into as a possible purchase in the future.... They have a mixing board that appears to do multi-track to a SD card.

I have seen the Zoom H4 as an alternative choice for a number of filkers.
