Confluence con report
Jul. 27th, 2009 01:47 pmI am home (kinda, I am at work today and have not been home yet) from Confluence. It was my first trip out to Confluence after many years of hearing about it and hearing recordings from Filkferengi.
mrgoodwraith puts together a great concert track and the convention is in a central location too, so it draws filkers from both the mid west and the east coast.
Concerts were anywhere from good to WOW and the biggest disappointment (to me) about the concerts were that Tom Smith and Judith Hayman canceled.
There were a number of people performing whom I have only seen before in open circle or only heard on recordings (both tape and CD). While most of the concerts were regulars for concerts at conventions, there was one concert from a neo to the filk community that everyone has been raving about. Rin Barton (I don't know her LJ names, but I did see them posted in a con review). She did a concert and was a lot of fun to listen to in circle. I look forward to hearing her perform again.
Getting to meet Clif Flynt and Pete Grubbs was nice after all of the years of hearing them as recordings only. Toyboat did a great rock concert and I enjoyed hearing their version of Banned from Argo. I look forward to their CD releasing hopefully at OVFF.
The reason I even considered attending the convention was the filk Guests - More Difficulties. They were my main reason for purchasing a membership to the con and going. Everything else was a bonus in my opinion.
More Diff. did a 1 1/2 hour long concert covering some of the many of the songs that appeared on the Technical Difficulties and Musical Chairs tapes along with 1-2 songs that have never been performed before. At least one song that was performed that only appeared on a con tape that is long since out of print. What was also interesting (and I wish I had a better seat to see it) was Linda Melnick signing a couple of songs. They unintentionally started the show off with a bang when one member tripped getting on stage (they were fine and so was the instrument.) I did some spot checking on my recording and while its good, its not the same as seeing them live. One bit of good news. They had CDs (digitalized, not remastered) of the two Technical Difficulties tapes and the Musical Chairs tape available. (They ran out of them before I got to them. I have to order a set from them.)
The open filks were very good and a bit of fun. I got to hear a few voices that rarely sing. It was unexpected and nice to hear Judifilksign singing vs signing someone else's singing. Saturday night was great too. We had all of the members of More Difficulties in the room for a while and they did a couple of songs and starmalachite played the Technical Difficulties parody that she was responsible for in open filk.
Next year, the Filk Guest is Peter Beagle, which is making me consider attending the convention again.
